New Project by the Ombudsman: “Equality and Respect” Platform
According to WHO data, in most cases women are subjected to physical violence by their spouses. It is emphasized that in 38 percent of cases of death resulting from violence and abuse, the perpetrator is the spouse or a person with whom the woman cohabits.

Despite ongoing reforms in our country to support women and protect them from violence, cases of violence against women are still reported on social media, and the Ombudsman continues to receive appeals on this matter.

Analysis shows that in 2024, the Ombudsman reviewed 409 appeals, and in the first seven months of 2025, 158 appeals concerning violence and abuse against women, interference in personal life, and humiliation of women within the family.

In this regard, in order to take measures to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women, the “Equality and Respect” platform was established by the Ombudsman.

The first mobile event within the “Equality and Respect” platform — the “Legal Aid Bus” campaign — was held at the Andijan Regional Center for the Rehabilitation and Adaptation of Women.

Currently, 7 women and their 8 children reside in the center. Some have been there for a month, while others for up to six months, undergoing treatment and learning professions. Some women also reported that they have started to earn income.

Under the leadership of the Ombudsman, members of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, deputies of the Andijan Regional Council, officials from the regional departments of the Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs, the National Social Protection Agency, the Ministry of Poverty Reduction and Employment, as well as representatives of NGOs held discussions with the women.

“I came to this center with a fractured jaw,” said one woman. “The conditions here are good, and we have mentors who teach us professions. Most importantly, my children are with me. Previously, I didn’t know such a center existed. Now I am learning a profession, finding ways to earn an income, and my confidence has grown significantly. From now on, I will not endure violence.”

Another woman shared: “I have attempted suicide many times. But the thought of what would happen to my children always stopped me. My parents passed away long ago, and since I have no close relatives to protect me, I was forced to live with violence.”

During the meeting, the women received comprehensive information on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and home ownership. Some women also submitted individual appeals to the Ombudsman.

It should be emphasized that the “Equality and Respect” project is aimed not only at supporting women victims of violence, but also at strengthening mechanisms for working with perpetrators.

In addition, a psychologist worked with the women and conducted several therapeutic sessions.
